SRMIST Attendance Rules and Regulations

Surviving your engineering, science, or management degree program at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) requires strict adherence to institutional academic requirements. SRMIST maintains a structured attendance tracking framework across all campuses, including Kattankulathur (KTR), Ramapuram, Vadapalani, and NCR Ghaziabad. To become eligible to sit for the semester-end examinations, students must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in each individual course registration.

Falling below this statutory minimum leads to direct academic penalties. It can block you from downloading your exam hall tickets and force you to repeat courses through additional semester registrations or weekend crash courses.

The 75% Mandatory Course-Wise Standard

Unlike universities that look purely at your semester average across all subjects, SRMIST computes attendance requirements on a course-by-course basis. If you register for five theory subjects and two laboratory workshops, you must clear the 75% threshold in every single one of those seven courses separately. This means having high attendance in one course won’t save you if you slip below 75% in another.

The 25% margin is not intended for casual bunking. It functions as a buffer to cover unavoidable circumstances such as sick leave, personal emergencies, family obligations, and official college representing events. It is critical to compute your margins carefully so you don’t exhaust this buffer early in the term.

The Condonation Window (65% to 74%)

If your class attendance in a particular subject falls between 65% and 74%, you enter the condonation range. Under SRMIST academic regulations, this shortage can be condoned by the Dean or academic committee only under specific conditions:

  • Genuine Medical Reasons: You must present a formal medical certificate issued by a registered practitioner, along with hospital admission sheets or prescriptions confirming your illness.
  • Official Duty (OD) Permissions: If you represent SRMIST in national sports meets, inter-university cultural fests, or official placement drives, your advisor and HOD must approve and register your OD logs.
  • Condonation Processing Fee: Once your medical or OD credentials are validated by the academic department, you must pay the designated university condonation fee before your hall ticket is issued.

Condonation is never guaranteed. It is subject to thorough administrative review. If the department finds your documents invalid or suspects proxy submissions, your request will be denied.

The Detention and ‘W’ Grade Zone (Below 65%)

Students whose attendance in any individual course drops below 65% face immediate detention for that specific course. In SRMIST, dropping below 65% leaves no room for condonation, regardless of the medical excuse or emergency. Detention results in:

  • Disqualification from Examinations: You are barred from writing the end-semester theory and practical exams for that subject.
  • The ‘W’ (Withheld) or ‘I’ (Incomplete) Grade: The course registration is cancelled, and a ‘W’ or ‘I’ grade is recorded on your official semester grade sheet.
  • Course Re-registration: You must register for the same course again in subsequent semesters. This requires attending summer terms, evening classes, or paying additional course fees to recover the credits.

Monitoring Daily Progress via SRM Portals

SRMIST tracks student progress digitally. You can check your official daily attendance records online using the university’s official student portals. The primary interfaces are:

  • SRM Academia Student Portal: The primary database where academic advisers log daily lecture attendance, internal marks, and registration schedules.
  • SRM Evarsity Portal: An alternate system used by specific branches to manage fees, grading reports, and profile records.

Log in regularly to verify that your faculty members have entered your attendances and OD points correctly. Discrepancies should be corrected within 48 hours of posting.

Frequently Asked Questions

SRMIST requires students to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in each individual course registration to be eligible to appear for the end-semester examinations.

Condonation is allowed up to a maximum of 10% (lowering the threshold to 65%) for genuine medical emergencies or representing the university in official events. This requires submitting medical certificates and paying a condonation fee.

If attendance falls below 65% in a course, the student is detained for that course. They will receive a ‘W’ or ‘I’ grade and must re-register or attend compensatory classes in a subsequent semester to clear it.

Yes, official On Duty (OD) permissions for sports, cultural fests, or placement activities count towards your attendance once approved by your HOD and advisor.

Students can track daily attendance on the official SRM Academia Student Portal or Evarsity portal using their registration credentials.
