JNTU Attendance Rules and Regulations

Maintaining a clean attendance record is one of the most critical aspects of surviving your engineering or pharmacy degree under Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU). JNTU academic regulations are strictly enforced across all its affiliated colleges in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (including JNTUH, JNTUK, and JNTUA). To be eligible to appear for the semester-end examinations, every student must maintain a minimum of 75% aggregate attendance.

Falling short of this threshold can lead to severe academic consequences, including paying steep condonation fees, submitting complex medical certificates, or being detained entirely from writing your exams.

The 75% Standard Rule

JNTU calculates your attendance as an aggregate across all theory lectures, tutorials, and practical laboratory sessions held during the semester. If your final aggregate percentage is 75% or above, you are in the safe zone. You will receive your exam hall ticket automatically without any compliance checks, parent meetings, or structural fines.

However, JNTU is famous for its strictness. Unlike some universities that offer grace marks or flexible internal adjustments, JNTU student databases are digital and automated. Your college updates the attendance logs daily on the university portal, making it very difficult to alter records at the last minute. This is why you must calculate your skips with absolute precision.

Understanding the Condonation Range (65% to 74%)

If your aggregate attendance falls between 65% and 74%, you are considered to have a shortage of attendance. In JNTU, this range is the ‘condonation bracket.’ You will not be allowed to write the exams unless you qualify for a condonation. To get a condonation:

• Medical Grounds: You must submit an official medical certificate issued by a registered civil surgeon or assistant surgeon, detailing a genuine medical issue that kept you away from classes.
• Co-curricular Participation: If you represented your college or university in official sports, cultural fests, or technical symposia, you must submit authorization letters from your principal or HOD.
• Condonation Fee: Even with valid documentation, you must pay a condonation fee set by the university (usually ranging from 300 to 1000 INR per semester) before your hall ticket is released.

Remember, condonation is not a right; it is a concession granted by the college academic committee and JNTU officials after reviewing your documentation. If your papers are rejected, you will be detained.

The Detention Zone (Below 65%)

If your aggregate attendance falls below 65%, JNTU regulations leave zero room for adjustments. You are detained from writing the semester-end examinations. Detention in JNTU means:

• You cannot write the theory or practical exams for that semester.
• You lose your academic year or semester, meaning you must redo the entire semester from scratch when that semester is offered again in the next academic year.
• You must pay the full semester tuition fees again for the redo period.

There are no condonation options or grace waivers for students below 65%, regardless of medical emergencies. This makes tracking your class count early in the term absolutely vital.
